It’s taken me a wildly long time, but I’m finally ready to divulge the ultimate long weekend guide to Maui…

As you may recall from my 29th birthday Substack, my mother and grandparents have deeply shaped my passion and appreciation for travel. Shortly after I was born, my grandfather retired from Texaco Inc. During his 33 years at the American oil brand, he often traveled in Hawaiʻi. My mother and grandmother once went with him and explored the islands from top to bottom. The two of them constantly recalled their trip to The Aloha State with such adoration.

Cut to: the first long weekend of 2026. My best friend Sarah and I are setting out on a 14-hour travel day to Hana-Maui Resort, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel. With a freshly-baked self-tan, wearing the set I typically sport for long-haul flights, and Maui Wowie blasting in my headphones, I’m electrified with anticipation for our three days on-island.

The Hotel

Hana-Maui Resort, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel’s story begins before American statehood.

In the mid-19th century, sugarcane was essential to Maui’s economy. This changed almost immediately following the WWII attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, when the U.S. took over practically every plantation for military training and infrastructure. The result was an accelerated decline of sugarcane crops.

Maui, particularly Hāna, was in desperate need of an economic and labor boost, when along came Paul Fagan. This wealthy San Francisco businessman and owner of the San Francisco Seals baseball team bought up abandoned sugar fields in 1945. By 1946, he’d established Ka`uiki Inn, the current Hana-Maui Resort, a Destination by Hyatt Hotel. When Hawaiʻi gained statehood 13 years later in 1959, the property was already regarded as a luxurious hideaway. Eighty years later, this ethos still rings true.

Fagan’s original inn featured just six rooms; today guests have their pick of 66 rooms, suites, bungalows, and residences. Interiors embrace modern ideals with “old Hawaiʻi” accents – wicker furniture, wood paneling, pastel bathroom tiles, and artwork depicting surfers and Polynesian canoes.

The town seemingly revolves around the hotel – a food truck park is located on the edge of the property; the Hāna Ranch Restaurant, just across the street from the main grounds, is surrounded by a convenience store, the post office, and bank; the only gas station is a Texaco (so kismet!); plus, Hāna High and Elementary School is adjacent to the hotel’s basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts (the students are never intrusive). Even the sun seems to rise and set around the Hāna-Maui Resort – this is something you’ll have to see to believe.

As far as amenities go, there are three dining and imbibing options, Jeep rentals, a spa, three-hole pitch and putt golf course, two pools, a yoga cabin, and a fitness center. Wellness-seekers prefer the off-the-beaten-path environs for utter rejuvenation, while adventurous travelers favor the close proximity to national and state parks. There is something for everybody.

Day 1

Traveling straight to Hawaiʻi from the East Coast is not for the weak; anticipate 14-18 hours of door-to-door travel. Arm yourself with plenty of airplane snacks, activities, and Lemme Sleep gummies (I swear by these).

Please do NOT drink the airplane coffee – caffeinate at OGG’s Royal Kona Coffee. Order an iced latte with macadamia nut milk and coconut syrup. (P.S. Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state that can grow coffee!)

The fastest way to Hana-Maui Resort from OGG is to take a third flight from the Kahului Commuter Terminal across the street. This final leg is just 15 minutes via Mokulele Airlines. Upon boarding, sit on the right side of the plane for breathtaking views of Maui.

When Sarah and I landed at HNA, we were met with a Jeep Wrangler that would be ours for the duration of our stay. It’s just a 10 minute drive to the hotel, where the front desk agent greeted us with guava juice and seashell leis before a bellman transported us via golf cart to our Double Queen Oceanfront Bungalow. Hana-Maui Resort’s accommodations feel like your very own Hawaiian hale (home) with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Once situated, head off to Hāna Ranch for sunset cocktails and ahi poke or feast on fish tacos alongside locals at the food truck park and call it a night.

Day 2

Morning

How to beat jet lag? Rise early and get in some movement – complimentary restorative and vinyasa flow yoga classes, as well as sound baths and meditations, are offered each day at the hotel’s Pailoa Studio. Floor-to-ceiling windows are often swung open so participants can hear the winds rustling through ancient trees and waves crashing at the shoreline.

Amble to The Restaurant in the main building for breakfast. The dining room faces Hāna Bay and Kauiki Hill, and the kitchen serves the freshest available goods from Hāna.

Take the first day to ease into the Road to Hāna. Also known as the aforementioned Hāna Highway, this legendary 64.4-mile drive along East Maui boasts over 600 curves and more than 50 one-lane bridges through coastal cliffs, verdant rainforests, and roaring waterfalls. Scenic stops and attractions await at nearly every mile marker.

You may discover content creators who lament about car sickness and driving anxiety. Those who get motion sickness should stock up on bands, Dramamine Less Drowsy, and these sunglasses – expect 10-12 hours of car time.

Since The Road begins in Pāʻia and ends in Hāna, you’ll technically do the drive backwards – but no matter how you take this journey, it’s transformative and memorable.

Spend the morning exploring Waiʻānapanapa State Park. Spanning 122 acres of the East Maui coastline, such natural wonders abound: as the Black Sand Beach, a blowhole, sea-sculpted lava formations, a birthing pool, a hidden swimming hole, ancient Hawaiian burial sites, and five sheltered sea caves. (*Reservations are required.)

Afternoon

Satisfy post-swim and nature walk cravings with smoothies and juices at Hāna Juice Box, within the food truck park near the hotel.

To those who enjoy driving: this is the time to conquer the Kahekili Highway aka “the locals’ road.” Infrastructure is so limited that most rental car companies actually prohibit driving on it. There are some unpaved sections, quite a bit of wildlife, and despite the one-lane roads, nobody beeps. Ultimately, drivers have the road to themselves and the vistas are incredible.

Note: If you’re a nervous driver, you shouldn’t be driving in Maui, period.

The main reason for the local’s road: it’s the fastest route to Maui Wine, the island’s oldest winery. Take the gravel path up to the white bungalow and snag a seat on the porch for a self-guided tasting. Expect wines derived from pineapple, minerally whites, berry-forward reds, and a sweet raspberry liqueur.

Evening

Attend a traditional Hawaiian lūʻau! There are plenty to choose from, though The Lūʻau at Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort is truly unforgettable.

Events unfold on a grassy knoll along the oceanfront. Guests are warmly welcomed by hula dancers who adorn them with seashell leis. As the sun sets, hula lessons and lawn games wind down and performers prepare for festivities. Guests are shown to their tables, which quickly become stacked with typical lūʻau appetizers: macaroni salad, ahi poke, rolls, and salads.

The performance kicks off shortly thereafter, with kāne (dancers) depicting the history of Hawaiʻi through song and Polynesian dances. A Chief guides each set with ancient stories and cultural context. More food finds its way to the table between numbers: purple sweet potatoes, Thai noodles, pulled pork, flaky white fish, and a smattering of sweet treats. The Samoan fire knife dance by Chief Mana is a raucous conclusion to a monumental evening.

Nightcap

Pop over to Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, the Grand Wailea’s flagship F&B concept. The striking centerpiece is an actual wraparound aquarium bar with tropical fish.

Kaiwi, the establishment’s only Hawaiian waiter, takes great care of patrons. He was especially pleased to learn that Sarah and I were staying at the Hana-Maui Resort – he grew up in Hāna, and it’s where the Kamaʻāina (Maui-born) live.

Kaiwi clued us in on Maui’s “foam game” – with tiki cocktails the primary focus of Hawaiʻi’s beverage culture, mixologists’ primary differentiator is the foam; they implement all sorts of techniques that riff on flavors, mouth-feel, and beyond.

Humu Humu’s Rum Punch is a clear standout: served in an owl-shaped ceramic tiki mug, it’s crafted with Plantation Pineapple Stiggin’s Fancy Rum, El Dorado aged rum, lime, guava, passionfruit, and an orange foam. Sarah selected The Grand: Ron Zacapa 23 yr Rum, orange curaçao, orgeat, lime juice, and a pineapple vanilla foam.

Nibble ube bread and slurp West Coast Oysters topped with Haiku cucumbers, jicama, and blood orange mignonette between sips. Executive Chef Ryan Urig will stock those returning to Hāna with additional delicacies like Venison Lumpia (sourced from Maui Nui Farm) for the near 2.5-hour drive.

Day 3

Morning

Wake up with the sun and head to The Restaurant for a Papaya Boat and the aptly-named “Hāna Sunrise” – a banana and coconut cafe latte. Peruse the on-site art collective, Hāna Coast Gallery, before hitting the road. It’s time for the full Road to Hāna.

Stop #1: Haleakalā National Park

Most visitors prefer to arrive ahead of sunrise, though Sarah and I opted to skip the 4:30am rainstorm. Made up of over 30,000 acres, the park is impressive no matter the time of day. Embark on rugged hikes along the dormant Haleakalā volcano or admire the West Maui Mountains from the Leleiwi Kalahaku overlooks,. Find freshwater pools and waterfalls amidst a bamboo forest in the coastal area of Kīpahulu, as well as a 100-year-old banyan tree about a mile into the Pīpīwai Trail.

Afternoon

Stop #2: Hāna Farms

Refuel with their famous banana bread and a farm-to-table Hawaiian pizza; this is perhaps the only place where it’s acceptable to put pineapple on top.

Stop #3: Nahiku Cafe

Nestled along a charming little strip, this café serves a delicious iced coffee with fresh coconut milk.

Stop #4: Garden of Eden

Hit the penjamin or pop a mushroom gummy and you might never leave. How do I even describe this place? On paper, it’s a 26-acre arboretum, home to rare trees, tropical blossoms, and awe-inspiring views. But, realistically? It’s a Hawaiian Alice in Wonderland fever dream; “Bamboo Alley” gives way to the “Enchanted Forest” with mango and avocado trees. Peacocks fan their feathers while traipsing in the “Banana Patch.” The opening sequence of Jurassic Park was filmed here! Time ceases to exist in a way that’s almost jarring. I actually enjoyed it, and I think you will, too. Embrace the whimsy.

Stop #5: Jaws Beach

A 1.5-mile-long dirt road off Hāna Highway arrives at an overlook. This is not a swimming area, but a place to watch elite surfers triumph legendary big-wave surf breaks. As epic as that sounds, it’s such a clusterfuck to get there, it may ruin the car. Don’t bother if you’re driving anything other than an off-roader. Those keen to see Jaws Beach should plan to walk the distance, so bring trainers.

Stop #6: Ho’okipa Beach Park

By the shoreline, locals and visitors gather under pavilions for cookouts, children swim in tidal pools, and green sea turtles bask on the sand. Stop at the overlook to spectate the incredible wind and water surfers, then stay for the vibrant sunset.

Evening

Stop #7: Pāʻia

This charming surfer town is the technical beginning of the Road to Hāna. Buildings are swathed in pink, purple, and turquoise hues and house art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Make sure you’re seated at Maui Brewing Co. before 6 PM to order a $5 Mai Tai.

Dinner at Mama’s Fish House

One of, if not the most, coveted reservation on Maui is Mama’s Fish House. Once flights are booked, this should be next. It’s an upscale seafood spot that’s been slinging the island’s best daily catches since the 1970s. Interiors feature vintage posters and Tahitian accents. Walking in and snagging a table is practically unheard of…but two pretty best friends decided to try, and we were successful. Tiki cocktails are absolutely necessary. Start with whichever sashimi is available, then order the Hawaiian Kanpachi: sustainably caught off the coast of Kailua-Kona, this mainstay is stuffed with crab and lobster and encrusted in macadamia nuts.

Day 4

Morning

Awaken with the sunrise one last time and stop by the Pailoa Studio or opt for a visit to the fitness center by the second pool. Nosh on breakfast and sip a Hāna Sunrise cafe latte. Post up on one of the sun chaises along the infinity pool, and perhaps indulge in a Mai Tai. The majority of the morning should involve soaking up the sun.

Afternoon

Lunch before the flight is a must. Venture past the Texaco station to Hāna’s second food truck park for Chowfun Noodles from D&G’s. Don’t forget to fill up the Jeep before returning the keys to the front desk.

Last Friday, I stopped by Bar Chimera, the new Midtown brasserie by Gracious Hospitality Management at 550 Madison, centered around three distinct bar programs: martinis, whiskey, and wine. I was seated at the martini bar and doted on like a princess thanks to some incredible industry friends.

Martinis are crafted to your liking (I opted for my usual: a “filthy” martini shaken with Condesa), and nearly every dish can be ordered from all three bars. My pescatarian friend Alice and I sampled East & West Coast oysters, shrimp cocktail, and crispy octopus; the Spring Pea Lettuce Cups blew us away. The Salt Bread Service is decadent. However, it’s what I missed that I can’t stop ruminating on: “Paradise” – a tequila martini made with Dobel Diamante Cristalino, tomato water, and passionfruit – plus the 550 Burger. Who wants to go back with me?

Earlier this week, Le Dive quietly opened their second location in the heart of the West Village. The original Dimes Square mainstay from Golden Age Hospitality consistently draws in the cool kids from NYC’s art and culture scenes, plus globally adored musicians and writers like Charli XCX and Orion Carloto. The iconic red motif with a European feel remains, leaning into the “French Tabac-inspired” vibe. Expect a curated list of natural wines, ice-cold dirty martinis, and oysters.

Eventide Oyster Co. Now Available at Ludlow House

Soho House is bringing a taste of New England to the city: Eventide Oyster Co., the popular Portland, Maine-based restaurant, will have a summer-long residency at Ludlow House. The top floor of the House will showcase Eventide’s celebrated approach to coastal dining, with a dedicated raw bar menu, elevated bites, and signature cocktails inspired by their hometown. I was among the first to try it just the other day, and can confirm you should have whichever of your friends still has a Soho House membership bring you for dinner.

Naughty Piglets at Entre Nous

Naughty Piglets, a South London bistro, is popping across the pond for an evening at Entre Nous. Owner Margaux Aubry will handle the wine, and Chef Francesco Sarvonio will serve up some special dishes. Book your table here.

American Cut Brings Back the “Hamptons Meal”

Moonburger will sling their smash patties, and, this year, there will even be something special for your pup.

Settepani Bakery Opens in Central Park

Catch me walking 30 blocks every Saturday from now on, because there’s no sweeter way to start the weekend than with sfogliatelle (or “shvoy-uh-del,” as my grandparents called them) from Settepani Bakery. Last week, the beloved family-owned bakery and café unveiled Settepani on the Meer, a pared-down outpost serving their typical Italian pasticcini plus Italian-style pan-baked pizza, sandwiches, and more.

Real New Yorkers, upon entering, will likely be flooded with memories of bygone summer days at Loopy Doopy – the rooftop’s past life, where young 20-somethings crammed on banquettes, fidgeting to get the perfect shot, sipping rosé “garnished” with an ice pop. Now, thanks to Leonessa, sunsets here are much more relaxed (and incredibly enjoyable). Rain or shine, enjoy Aperitivo Hour, all sorts of spritzes, and an extensive Italian wine list.

Perched atop the 16th floor of the Merchant Hotel on Orchard Street is Daintree Lower East Side, the newest rooftop bar from Parched Hospitality Group. From the lounge and two outdoor terraces, guests can take in the sweeping views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn skyline.

Enjoy Wagashi, Sakura-Inspired Otoshi & Ikebana at Sake No Hana

A limited-time collaboration at Sake No Hana in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month brings together Chef Phoebe Ogawa, Chef Yoshi Kojima, and Pastry Chef Erin Cayaban for a menu highlighting sakura and the tradition of hanami. Sotheby’s Opened a Restaurant on the Upper East Side

Sotheby’s is now offering more than just coveted collectibles – on April 16, Marcel opened to much ado within the Breuer Building on the Upper East Side (which now serves as the premier auction house’s global HQ). Admire interiors curated by Roman and Williams and indulge in a sumptuous smattering of French fare. Earlier today, Emily Sundberg of Feed Me stated she’s in a “sugar plum trance” after breaking open the Vacherin dessert with a brass hammer. I still have yet to go, but I can’t imagine a better way to round out the week. If anyone wants to do dinner at Marcel with me, leave a comment; I’ll see what I can do.

A Makeshift “Kräftskiva” at Time Again

Bar Oliver Announces New Chef + Guest-Chef Pintxos Series

Last week, Bar Oliver, the Chinatown pintxos and vermouth bar inspired by Spain’s Basque coast, announced that they’re entering a new era this spring with Chef Oscar Paz at the helm. Since opening in late 2024, Bar Oliver has cultivated a cult following thanks to its aperitivo culture. Chef Paz expands on this with a monthly guest-chef pintxo series; the first iteration kicks off with Chef Elijah Tarlow of Borgo.

Tokyo Record Bar’s Third Installment of the Chef’s Playlist Series

Arguably one of NYC’s first places to make omakase approachable to the masses (and to modernize hi-fi vibes within the city’s restaurant scene), Tokyo Record Bar remains relevant in the evolving hospitality landscape nearly 9 years post-opening. They’re currently spotlighting stellar international up-and-coming culinary talents. On Monday, May 4 & Tuesday, May 5, TRB’s Executive Chef Ignacia Valdés will collaborate with Chef Robert Mendoza to curate an eight-course menu inspired by their shared classical French pedigree, plus Chef Valdés’ Chilean perspective and Chef Mendoza’s Mexican heritage. Seatings take place at 6 PM or 8:30 PM.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo

Ah, yes. Another holiday where white folks can cosplay culture. Perhaps this is an unsavory time to admit that I will be partaking in celebrations. I haven’t quite decided where just yet, but I’m eyeing tostadas and the frozen Ixmand cocktail at Oxomoco; aguachile verde at Mariscos El Submarino; incredible tacos straight from CDMX at Taquería Ramírez; or even a chef’s tasting at the “Progressive Mexican” Corima.

Oyatte Debuts in Murray Hill

Oyatte, the inaugural fine dining restaurant from Chef Hasung Lee, opens in Murray Hill. The gastronomic journey spans two floors, and the contemporary, eight-course tasting menu rooted in seasonality is built around a commitment to a single farm in upstate New York: Crown Daisy Farm, led by Brett Ellis (former head farmer at The French Laundry). Oyatte is the first full expression of Chef Lee’s culinary voice after a career shaped by some of the world’s most influential kitchens. Make a reservation here.

The temps are finally rising, and rooftop season has arrived. Kick it off at Broken Shaker with their Golden Hour Social from 6-8 PM. Bar Hugo Opens in SoHo

As I said, rooftop season is upon us. Bar Hugo, the new rooftop concept overlooking the Hudson River at Hotel Hugo SoHo, opens on May 7. Intended to be an all-day destination with sweeping unobstructed river views, the vibe emulates Venice’s most storied hotel bars and New York’s vivacity. Swing by for sunlit afternoon spritzes, golden-hour cocktails, and an elevated nightlife experience.

Three years ago, I rolled into Milano Centrale train station with my best friend, Sarah, after a week of bopping around Italy. We only had 17 hours to spend in the city, and zero illusions of “doing it all.” With expectations low and curiosity high, we were perfectly poised for just enough time to chase espresso, aperitivo, and a half-day of pure magic in Italy’s most fashion-forward locale.

During the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, the city buzzes with new energy. Even with throngs of crowds, limited reservations, and the clock working against you, Milan proves it’s not about how long you stay. It’s about how smartly–and stylishly–you move.

Where to Stay: Portrait Milano

Europe’s oldest seminary closed in 2002 after decades of stalled restoration, its magnificent piazza shuttering with it. Twenty years later, Portrait Milano, the Milan flagship of the Ferragamo family’s Portrait Hotels, reopened the former Archiepiscopal Seminary and restored its piazza as a vibrant gathering place–once again open to the city, and now so much more. Guest rooms are serene, impeccably composed retreats, where every detail is considered and customizable: an in-room iPad offers curated daily itineraries alongside hyper-specific turndown preferences, from pillow density to bespoke treats. Interiors draw inspiration from Milanese salons of the 1950s, elevated by Florentine craftsmanship and threaded throughout with Ferragamo’s signature red accents.

Where to Dine

10_11 Bar, Giardino, Ristorante

I think about my experience here all the time. Though the interiors mirror the luxe touches found throughout the neighboring lobby and public spaces, the ambiance and menu offerings are quite approachable. The cocktail menu is a contemporary elevation of a menu recovered from a medieval Milanese tavern. Let the bar staff choose a cocktail for you based on your preferred flavor profiles; one is even served in a glass encrusted with crushed chocolate and cheese. As for the culinary program, anticipate Northern Italian-inspired dishes. Mondeghili (Milanese meatballs) are served on a wire tray fresh out of the kitchen, and the veal tonnè is incredibly authentic. Pasta in bianco is the clear standout, made only with pasta and Parmigiano Reggiano.

La Locanda del Gatto Rosso

I’m not going to sugarcoat it: don’t come here expecting to have a fabulously memorable meal. It’s a great spot for lunch, with a perfectly fine Spaghetti ai Frutti di Mare. The main appeal is that it’s open on Sundays.

Where to Find a Sweet Treat: Marchesi 1824

This pasticceria is one of the city’s oldest and most famous. The traditional Panettone is their claim to fame, though the Colomba and biscuits are also worth trying. Their dessert gift boxes, as well as coffee and tea – all arranged neatly in ornately decorated, pastel-hued tins – make for excellent gifts.

What to Do

Tour the Duomo di Milano

Everything seems to revolve around the Milan Cathedral. The Gothic architecture is striking – it’s Italy’s largest church and took over six centuries to build. Along the rooftop terraces, visitors will find thousands of statues, including the resplendent Madonnina.

Go Shopping at Antonia

If you plan to shop anywhere during your visit, let it be Antonia. Founded in 1999 by Antonia Giacinti, the boutique is a major retailer in Milan. The collections are meticulously curated to showcase world-renowned labels alongside avant-garde up-and-comers. Its second location is situated in the piazza of Portrait Milano.

Peruse Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the bel paese’s oldest active commercial arcade – and also a major landmark in Milan. Comprising four stories and named for the first King of Italy, it sits steps from the Duomo. You could spend a whole afternoon ogling the storefronts.

Marvel at The L.O.V.E. Sculpture

Don’t be fooled by the name: there’s nothing amorous about the L.O.V.E. Sculpture in Piazza degli Affari. Facing the Italian Stock Exchange, the 36-foot-high marble statue by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan depicts a hand with all fingers severed – save for the middle finger. Regarded as Il Dito (“The Finger”), it’s a permanent and provocative critique of the finance industry. If you’re lucky, you may find a local dance group traipsing along the piazza.

Saved For Next Time

The Last Supper

Painted on the wall of the refectory within the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, The Last Supper is Leonardo da Vinci’s interpretation of the moment Christ announces one of his disciples will betray him. Art historians consider it to be one of–if not the most–important murals in the world. Reservations for 15-minute viewing sessions are mandatory.

Teatro alla Scala

Built on the site of the former Santa Maria alla Scala church, this historic opera house was inaugurated in 1778 and has premiered countless notable Italian operas. Largely considered the “temple” of opera, Teatro alla Scala boasts opulent Neoclassical architecture and exceptional acoustics. I’m quite keen to see a show here during my next trip.

Fondazione Prada

Established in 1993 within a former 20th-century distillery by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, Fondazione Prada is an independent, experimental space for projects and exhibitions spanning contemporary art, cinema, photography, philosophy, and architecture. The complex, designed by OMA, features a bar conceptualized by Wes Anderson and a gold leaf “Haunted House” with a permanent display by Richard Gober.

Brera District

I’d love to spend a day ambling along the cobblestone streets of the Brera District, lined with boutiques and cafés. There are also apparently some incredible dinner spots.

Navigli District

This beloved neighborhood is centered around the two canals of Milan. It’s where locals go for aperitivo and spend their weekends dancing.

Tonight, I’ll bop down to Freehand New York for their Anti-Sweetheart Stitches party with Rails. I plan to create my own custom Rails x Freehand hat. The Elizabeth Street embroider, Abbode (run by the iconic Abby Price), will be on-site, stitching customizations of cheeky takes on classic Sweethearts candy sayings. Lemonhead will be glamming up the girls with a DIY Glitter Bar, and RAMONA wine spritzers will be popping all night long.

Caviar Chicken Nuggets at COQODAQ followed by karaoke at Go Go Sing

Chicken nuggets topped with caviar at COQODAQ, followed by karaoke and Champagne at Go Go Sing…all the elements of a perfect evening. And, under one roof. Need I say more?

Treats from Ladurée

I’ve always wanted to celebrate Valentine’s Day in Paris, but macarons from Ladurée are surely the next best thing. This heart-shaped gift box features all sorts of indulgent flavors, like Rose, Tea Marie-Antoninette, Raspberry, and Coffee. I always prefer to round out the day with a sweet treat, and it’s even better when I can share it.

Workout Class at Practice Room

Any day that starts with a workout is great – especially when it involves Practice Room. I went to my first class on my birthday last week, and I’m hooked. The two studios–NoHo and Williamsburg–offer all sorts of infrared (read: heated) Pilates, sculpt, and flow classes. Those who attend the morning sessions in Brooklyn can expect post-workout Apollo Bagels.

Specialty Latte at Smiley Coffee

From the team who brought the world THE smiley face logo in the 1970s comes Smiley Coffee, a bright little café on Ludlow Street. Substack subscribers have access to specialty drinks, like the Cherry Lychee Matcha Cloud Cap Latte, topped with conversation heart candies. How adorable?!

Gohar World x Climax Books Pop-Up

Gohar World is a kitschy homeware lovers’ paradise, with trinkets such as swan-shaped Mother of Pearl caviar spoons, embroidered Champagne bibs, and a spacesuit-chic apron with embroidered lace gloves sewn to each end. They’ll be popping up at Climax Books, a cult-favorite erotica bookstore in the East Village. Guests can shop new limited-edition bean bookmarks, a Gohar-curated shelf of vintage reads, and nosh on heart-shaped treats.

Jewelry Edition by Manhattan Vintage Show at The Fifth Avenue Hotel

The Fifth Avenue Hotel is one of my favorites in the city, and I’m thrilled about this collaboration with the Manhattan Vintage Show. Pizza & Wine at Ops East Village

Last week, I celebrated my birthday with two of my best girls over pizza and wine at the James Beard-nominated Ops. The wine list is impressive and lengthy, with plenty of orange pours (which I always love to see) and delicious wood-fired pizza. Throughout the year, they partner with neighboring East Village mainstays to offer unique pies. Specials for this weekend remain unknown, but according to this, you should still expect to see them on Sunday.

Movie Night at Village East by Angelika

The other day, I had a near-NSFW conversation with a beloved colleague, during which we giggled over what we may see in Wuthering Heights. Now that opening weekend has finally arrived, I can hardly wait to see it…and there’s no better place to enjoy a highly-anticipated release than my favorite theatre, Village East by Angelika.

Nightcap at Stars

My girls and I will surely need to debrief after the masterpiece we’ll have just witnessed. Stars is a new, walk-in-only, 12-seat wine bar, just down the block from the theatre. I imagine us getting buzzy over a bottle of the 2024 Anima Mundi pet-nat.

Relaxation Day at Shibui Spa

Of all the hotel spas in Manhattan, the Spa at Hotel Chelsea receives quite the hype. (Understandably so; it’s one of my favorite hotels, but I have yet to experience the spa.) However, Shibui Spa within The Greenwich Hotel seems to fly under the radar. As the name suggests, Japanese philosophies are embraced, and treatments are studies of balance. I’m quite intrigued by the “Omakase Facial” – its description: “To Entrust/Protect.”

“It’s [3:11 PM] here in New York, and it’s my birthday. I’m officially old.”

Such a quote feels only fitting as I sit on my leopard-print living room carpet, my laptop perched atop my coffee table in my own “Carrie Bradshaw” apartment, with Sex and the City (S3, E6: “Are We Sluts?”, to be exact) playing in the background.

In this downtime between my solo morning activities and a night out in the East Village with two close friends, I can’t help but reflect on the last 29 years and what’s in store.

When I was seven years old, I thought I’d either be a “big-time magazine editor” (a la Jenna Rink) or The First Female Pope, with a Pomeranian named Bubbles that my husband and I rescued shortly after our wedding at the Central Park Boathouse. I didn’t even know how big I could dream.

Where I find myself now is so much better (not to mention, I dodged quite the scene in Vatican City)…How lucky I am that travel is one of my main constants! How lucky I am to explore all sorts of destinations. How lucky I am that so many people, establishments, and brands trust me to tell their stories. Above all else, how lucky I am to share this with all of you!

The last 29 years brought so much discovery and wonder, thanks mostly to my mother and grandparents, who instilled in me boundless curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. I plan to carry this same energy into the next near-three decades.

With that, here are 11 (2+9) getaways and stays (in no particular order) on my new travel vision board.

Getaway: Morocco

I don’t really care that Casablanca was filmed just a short drive from the Avalon Burbank apartment complex I lived in during my SULA semester – after seeing the film during my tween years, I knew I must go. The riads, the bazaars, the architecture…it all seemed so intoxicatingly exotic. Morocco seems like pure magic.

Stay: Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay

“Where Morocco meets the Mediterranean,” between Tangier and Tetouan, stands this dreamy 55-key retreat. With an earthy color palette, sun-kissed shores, and endless opportunities to get out on the water, it’s hard to believe Royal Mansour Tamuda Bay isn’t a mirage.

Getaway: French Polynesia

I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with French Polynesia since attending The Lū’ua at Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, last month (more on this soon). So much Hawaiian history is rooted in Tahiti – specifically the Marquesas Islands – but I’m quite keen to explore all that the collectivity has to offer.

Stay: Vahine Island, Tahaa, an SLH Hotel

Described as “the ultimate island fantasy,” this 23-acre remote resort and spa is set amidst a turquoise lagoon and coconut trees. There are nine beachfront and overwater bungalows, plus suites in La Villa Royale. A helicopter to Bora Bora is a 14-minute jaunt.

Getaway: Brazil

Brazil was voted Travel + Leisure’s 2026 Destination of the Year, and it’s easy to see why. Everything a traveler could possibly want can be found in the world’s fifth-largest city: beaches, rolling green hills, gastronomy, dancing, live entertainment…the list goes on.

Stay: Fasano Boa Vista

Located less than an hour from São Paulo in Brazil’s countryside, guests can expect a hotel that marries architecture and natural elements, thanks to designer Isay Weinfeld. Fasano hospitality extends to the restaurant, where a traditional feijoada buffet takes place on Saturdays. Those looking to spend time outdoors can play golf on Brazil’s only 18-hole course or partake in equestrian activities.

Getaway: Japan

I can’t recall exactly when I became enamored with Japan, but I’ll never forget when my mom came home with the Fodor’s Essential Japan book when I was around six years old. I pored over that guide, staring agape at the landscapes, architecture, and dishes that looked oh-so foreign and far-flung. Now that the yen has finally reached a favorable conversion rate, Americans are heading there by the droves. I look forward to being able to take enough time off to explore each region.

Stay: The Westin Rusutsu Resort

I plan to get swept up in the throngs of people shuffling about Tokyo’s streets, and luxuriate in the historic ryokans of Kanazawa. But, after skiing for the first time in over 15 years last February in St. Moritz, I’ve set a goal of taking more wintry trips. In my research, I stumbled across awe-inspiring scenes of snow-topped trees lining the slopes of Rusutsu, a village in Hokkaido. The Rusutsu Resort, comprised of three different hotels, is largely regarded as the best accommodation. While the Hotel & Convention Center is closest to the slopes, The Westin seems better suited for adults (read: there’s an amusement park in the former).

Getaway: Réunion Island

I didn’t know much about Réunion Island until I saw a girl on TikTok divulge three surprising facts she did not know until she visited (the power of social media!). Leisurely floats in lagoons, essentially no deadly land animals, and one of the world’s most active volcanoes that poses no major threats to people–what a dream for adventurers. I’d brave my mom’s storage unit for my hiking boots if it meant I’d be wearing them here.

Stay: Blue Margouillat Seaview Hotel

This Creole-style property overlooks the Indian Ocean from Saint-Leu. Guests will rarely see a cloud in the sky, and every space – from the salons to intimate suites with private plunge pools – promotes utter relaxation. Whale watching and stargazing are not to be missed. However, the real heart of the hotel is the restaurant, whose menu spotlights small inland seafood, garden herbs, and local spices.

Getaway: Antarctica

This needs no explanation.

Stay: White Desert

Polar summer is a brief, intense season when the sun shines 24 hours a day. In the Antarctic, it typically lasts from November to February. During this time, record-breaking polar explorer Patrick Woodhead and the White Desert team fly just 12 guests to their polar camp, who are in for one of the most intimate and immersive experiences on Earth. The luxe sleeping tent interiors evoke an Alpine ski chalet.

Getaway: Türkiye

As a transcontinental country larger in area than those in Europe, I know there’s a lot to see. However, I’ve convinced myself I must first venture to Fethiye and Bodrum (there’s an aquatic through-line here). On that same trip, or perhaps on a future one, I’d love to encounter the regional icons that surround Cappadocia and beyond.

Stay: Hillside Beach Club + Maxx Royal Bodrum Resort

Hillside Beach Club in Fethiye is an expansive 330-key resort with three private beaches, all sorts of dining options, two spas, a traditional Turkish bath, and activities like island-hopping by traditional gulet boat. A few hours away, Maxx Royal Bodrum Resort skews ultra-luxury, with completely secluded Hill Villas, Michelin-starred dining concepts, and a holistic wellbeing centre. Leaning into the beach club scene, the property is home to the famed Scorpios Bodrum.

Getaway: California Coast + Wine Country

Standing in line for Little Red Door in Paris’ third arrondissement, I met a group of friends who own a restaurant in Healdsburg, California. I was taking a brief vacation from my job as a publicist for a small PR agency that represented some wineries in Sonoma, a renowned wine county often overlooked for Napa. It all felt very kismet, though nothing but IG follows ever came from it. As I continue to learn more about viticulture and achieve further WSETs, this is a trip I’m excited to take – and while I’m out there, I’m eager to indulge in a personal writing retreat in Mendocino.

Stay: Trailborn Mendocino + The Cottages at Little Saint

I’m truly counting down the days until the opening of Hill House at Trailborn Mendocino. The hotel’s design-forward accommodations and public spaces, plus excursions led by expert local guides – such as nature walks through ancient redwood forests or tours of local wineries – are sure to inspire.

Then, I’ll finally see Healdsburg with a stay at The Cottages at Little Saint, which opened earlier this year from the team behind the 100% plant-based restaurant, coffee bar, wine lounge, cocktail bar, and events venue, Little Saint. The four private cottages are located just behind this cultural hub in downtown Healdsburg.

Getaway: Georgia

As of late, I’ve found myself most excited by the natural wines sourced from Georgia while out drinking around NYC. Most average imbibers have probably discovered Georgian varietals in the past few years or so, as it’s become more readily available in the States, but the country is regarded as the “cradle of wine,” with over 8,000 years of winemaking history. There’s always a good reason for a wine-focused getaway – it’s usually paired with standout cuisine and plenty of wellness opportunities (to balance all of the consumption, naturally).

Stay: Vazisubani Estate

Tradition is the center of the itinerary at Vazisubani Estate. In the late 1800s, nobleman Sulkan Chavchavadze developed 20 hectares of vineyards. Now stretching 35 hectares, the central fixtures of your visit – hotel, restaurant, and cellar – are all located steps from one another within an enchanting garden.

Getaway: Indonesia

When I first started writing for Hotels Above Par back in August 2020, we covered Indonesia quite frequently, as that was - funnily enough – where the majority of our audience was based in the early days. I became infatuated with the vast rice fields (the country’s primary crop!); they’re absolutely breathtaking. From the sea to the terrain, there are endless experiences to uncover here.

Stay: Amanjiwo

Located in Central Java, this Aman resort overlooks the Buddhist temple Borobudur, a Unesco World Heritage Site. Its location is ideal for exploring all of the region’s natural and historic attractions, and there’s plenty to do on site for those who book this blissful escape.

Getaway: Saint-Tropez

Perhaps you can say I’ve been interested in St. Tropez since I started using their self-tanning products in college. But mostly, I’m intrigued by the dichotomy of the place: there’s exorbitant wealth and luxury, but it’s a small fishing village at its core. Plus, this year, it’s generating renowned buzz thanks to the forthcoming season of The White Lotus.

Stay: COMO Le Beauvallon

I had such an incredible stay at COMO Castello Del Nero this past September that I’m determined to visit every COMO hotel and resort. This one first opened in the 1910s as a 100-room Belle-Époque palace designed by Swiss architect Julien Flengenheimer. Set above the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the hotel redefines elegance through unmatched service, refined dining, and the same allure guests know from other COMO properties. A complimentary eight-minute boat transfer connects the grounds to the port, striking the perfect balance between privacy and connection.

Last Sunday, I experienced my first snow as an Upper East Sider! Nothing hits quite like the first snow in a new apartment…but, most importantly, it means the holiday season has officially begun.

The intimate setting has been utterly transformed into an alpine wonderland: stools are draped with sumptuous white furs; pine cones and garland dot the marble bar; and a (fake) balsam lined with twinkling light and branch-shaped candles along the bar cast a moody glow. Plus, something about the ambiance feels snow-dusted – or perhaps that’s my imagination running wild after a couple of Gingerbread Negronis.

Classic holiday tunes soundtrack the evening, muted only by the hum of lively conversation and sighs of delight following the first sip of a special libation. Dante’s head bartenders, Eloy Pacheco and Roberto Bracco, worked closely with Aperol to curate a cocktail menu that feels true to what you’d order on a snowy New York evening, while also channeling what you’d crave after a day on the slopes.

Guests of this “first look” event were treated to five signatures. The standout serve of the evening was the Panettone Negroni – crafted with spiced butter Zacapa, Tanqueray Ten, Campari, Cappelletti, Palo Cortado sherry, PX sherry, dry curaçao, and bitters. However, a pinoli-stuffed green olive was quite a nice garnish for the classic Aperol Spritz.

While I’m not privy to what “indulgent bites” will be offered alongside these cocktails, I do know that tablestop s’mores stations were present throughout the evening. Although Courtney Presley of The Corner Booth wasn’t able to fully roast her marshmallow to golden perfection, I’d say the experience was “priceless.” (And, I believe Mastercard would agree.)

While we’re on the topic, it’s worth noting that Mastercard cardholders will have access to various events and perks, including preferred reservations and exclusive entry to two four-night residencies from world-renowned bars.

Hello, lovers! It’s been a minute since you’ve heard from me here…but I’m checking back in and assure you that Turndown Service isn’t going anywhere.

Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting a tastemaker I’ve admired for quite some time: Tori Simokov of the Window Seat Substack. Can you imagine a better place for two luxury travel lovers to meet than the recently opened Faena New York?

We began with a full tour, which kicked off in the lobby, or what Faena refers to as The Cathedral–a soaring, cinematic prologue to Alan Faena’s hospitality universe.

Guests are immediately greeted by a site-specific commission from Diego Gravinese: Ascension. The first panel is a nod to Rockefeller Center’s iconic sculpture, reframed through Faena’s lens of mythology, symbolism, and unabashed spectacle.

Look above the spiraling gold staircase, and you’ll spot the codes of the house–rose, eye, crystal, sword, among others. This is Faena’s alphabet of symbolism, a motif that will reappear throughout the property.

Last is the depiction of a floating gold egg cleaved by an arrow–split into heaven and Earth, with the New York City skyline in full view, an allegory for Faena’s arrival in Manhattan. Around it swirls an interpretation of cosmic matter photographed by NASA, grounding the hotel’s creation story in something at once celestial and scientific.

From The Cathedral, Faena’s signature theatricality continues. Raspberry red lacquer walls, gold accents, camel velvet sofas, and cheetah-print rugs define what feels gauche to designate as the check-in area. Expanses of travertine root the building in NYC’s Art Deco lineage.

Then we ventured to La Boca. Inspired by the Buenos Aires neighborhood known for its tango legacy, it features three commissioned artworks, tabletops crafted by Frank Pollaro from his woodworking studio in New Jersey, and banquettes arranged to encourage conversation.

Overhead, chandeliers by the late South American artist Alberto Garutti–his final project–flicker in time with actual thunderstorms. Add live music seven nights a week, shifting in tone depending on the evening’s mood, and La Boca becomes less a restaurant and more a nightly improv performance.

Francis Mallmann’s culinary program follows suit: seven distinct heats defined by custom grills instead of open flame, a methodical take on elemental cooking.

The Living Room is the beating heart of the property. This sultry lounge features custom sofas clad in velvet leopard-print upholstery; plush chairs swathed with zebra print; more burlwood tables and light fixtures; bouquets of roses arranged in gold vases; and plenty of ceramic black leopards–the hotel’s “mascot,” if you will.

From here, follow Faena New York’s version of the Faena Miami woolly-mammoth-in-residence: Keith Haring’s expansive Monterey Jazz Festival mural. An ode to an American artist whose love of New York–and more specifically, West Chelsea–feels like destiny for a space such as this; plus, it’s one of Haring’s only pieces that has never touched the ground, playing into the property’s godly, ethereal essence.

At the end of the mural stands La Cava, the private dining room, which boasts a pop-art depiction of Queen Elizabeth II and doubles as a wine cellar for the beverage team’s most premier vintages.

The swanky speakeasy El Secreto features a geometric rotating disco ball, an eight-seat mirror-paneled bar, state-of-the-art sound systems, and a private wrap-around patio. The concept has yet to be unveiled, but perhaps we can expect some New Year’s Eve festivities.

The hotel hosts 120 rooms and suites, including three master units on the seventh floor that boast sweeping terraces, plus the signature Faena Suite. Guests can expect ample closet space, marble bathrooms (some with deep, circular tubs), and living spaces that foster conversation. In perhaps the most poetic architectural flourish, the building does not physically move, but it’s designed to “spin,” with each room catching natural light at optimal angles throughout the day.

Next year will bring The Theater, modeled after the famed venue in Miami Beach–complete with aerialist and burlesque performances, as well as the Terra Santa Healing House, blending precision of Western wellness with South American ritual. Think hammams and plunge pools paired with palo santo and sound baths. One of Alan Faena’s own obsessions–roses–finds its way here, too, as a symbol of resilience, reinvention, and rebirth.

Ultimately, Faena New York is less a hotel opening than a world-building exercise…and like all good epic journeys, this one is only just beginning.

After swinging back to The Living Room for a round (or two) of cocktails, Tori and I concluded our evening with a nightcap at Crane Club–just around the corner, and still buzzy even a year after its opening. The acclaimed CDMX bar Hanky Panky popped up at the bar for a one-night-only rendezvous, serving up quite inventive cocktails.

I sipped the Noongar, HP’s take on a funky orange wine, composed of Patrón Reposado, dry vermouth, plum, apple, dill, and CO2.

Traipse through the lobby at Hôtel Barrière Fouquet’s New York and pull back the velvet curtain to enter the sultry, low-lit hidden speakeasy, Titsou.

From now through June 9, luxury Spanish brand LOEWE is reimagining the space to mark two major moments: the 10th anniversary of its Puzzle Bag and the release of Loewe Magazine No. 7.

The other night, I had the pleasure of experiencing this collaboration firsthand, and it truly felt like a night out of a Sex and the City episode. (I’m a Samantha, naturally.)

Ivy-scented candles within LOEWE’s iconic vessels flicker between lush floral arrangements, setting a dreamy yet moody tone that perfectly complements the elegance of the Puzzle collection and the Paris-meets-Manhattan ambiance of Fouquet’s at large.

The latest issue of the magazine is on display atop every table, and it’s worth flipping through with one of the special cocktails in hand–take your pick between The Magazine (earl-grey infused white rum, lime juice, simple syrup, bitter angostura, Champagne) or Puzzle Anniversary (mezcal, Aperol, yellow chartreuse, lime juice).

Don’t invite your boyfriend–a night here calls for that outfit you’ve been saving, your favorite girls and gays, and a Platinum AMEX (preferably your best friend’s SD’s *iykyk*).

As I sipped my cocktail and traced the stitching on the strap of my Puzzle Bag, I couldn’t help but wonder…in a city that never stops moving, is the real luxury simply finding a moment that makes you pause?

Earlier this month, JR & Son reopened with the same name but new ownership—the team who recently revived Kellogg’s Diner just down the street.

Nearly a century later, what we now cherish as memorabilia and vintage photographs are of the same sort once found lining JR & Son’s walls. The entire space has been lovingly restored to evoke Old World charm, so stepping inside truly feels like stepping back in time.

The wood booths lined with leather-bound cushions make for long, intimate dinners with close friends over shared plates. Executive Chef Patricia Vega is at the helm of the kitchen, whose menu emphasizes soulful pastas, red sauces, and tavern classics with touches of Thai influence–a nod to her days at Thai Diner. The bar hums with patrons sipping cocktails named for iconic Italian-American cinema.

JR & Son has only been open a couple of weeks, and not only have I already been twice, but I’ve tried nearly everything on the menu. Let’s discuss…

COCKTAILS + WINE

The wine list is highly curated with a focus on Italian varietals (to nobody’s surprise). Expect a titillating buzz from the spirit-forward craft cocktails like the nostalgic House Dry Martini (vodka, thyme, dry vermouth, twist) and Negroni-esque Strawberry Letter (gin, strawberry amaro, Campari, lemon).

BREAD SERVICE + RAW BAR

Any restaurant with dedicated bread service is sure to win me over (gold star if it’s complimentary…which, alas, JR & Son’s is not). Pastry Chef Amanda Perdomo bakes the Green Olive Focaccia and Garlic & Herb Parker House Rolls fresh every day. They’re served with a choice of soft butter or olive oil for $8; a la carte is $4.

Fresh seafood is always a nice touch. Six for $15 or 12 for $28 Oysters and Clams are served with a choice of salsa di mare, mignonette, and cocktail sauce. You might as well complete your tray with Shrimp Cocktail ($15) and 1/2 Lobster Cocktail ($18).

STARTERS

Every meal here starts strong. The Infatuation didn’t love the Arancini Salad ($16) as much as I do. The watercress and radicchio allow the smoked mozzarella and citrusy vinaigrette to take center stage.

If the foundation of a Caesar Salad ($15) is charred greens, I’m a happy girl. JR & Son’s is topped with anchovy crunch and bread crumbs; it can also be made vegan.

Stracciatella ($17) is such a crowd pleaser and easy to share. This one is served with black olive caramel, bottarga, and slices of crunchy sourdough drizzled with olive oil.

PASTA

Ravioli with mint ricotta, English peas, and Parmigiano Reggiano ($28) has quickly emerged as a staple, though it apparently won’t be on the menu long.

I don’t particularly gravitate towards any of the Roman Mother pastas, though this cracked black pepper-forward cacio e pepe ($24) should not be skipped.

Chef Patricia’s Spaghetti & Meatballs are just as good as your nonna makes them…the red sauce is balanced, the spaghetti is al dente, and I can’t say for sure, but she must be using a blend of veal and beef for those meatballs.

Paccheri with lobster fra diavolo sauce ($36) is luxurious. Whereas most fra diavolo (aka spicy Italian red sauce) packs its heat from red chili flakes, Chef Patricia’s leans into a distinctly Thai flavor profile thanks to chili peppers.

ENTREES

I’ve heard mixed reviews on the Chicken Parm ($29), and I don’t understand why it’s so divisive. Each bite is layered with spicy tomato sauce, gooey mozzarella cheese, and crispy breaded chicken. It’s topped with a generous dusting of sesame seeds and a singular chili pepper.

Seared to perfection and arranged in rows atop a velvety bed of parsley butter, the Skirt Steak ($45) is an absolute must.

SWEETS

While Chef Patricia’s mains are served on green-rimmed plates reminiscent of a traditional tavern, Chef Amanda’s pastries are arranged on vintage china sourced by her friends and colleagues. Thus far, I’ve tried three of the four offerings:

Rainbow Cookie Layer Cake ($13) is as decadent as it looks. It’s baked as a slab with the typical pink, yellow, and green cake layers separated by a thin layer of jelly. Coconut is used in lieu of the traditional almond flavor, and each piece is finished with a bit of Maldon salt.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is typically my feelings towards tiramisu. For whatever reason, this dessert is precious to me; I don’t like it when people try to reinvent tiramisu. However, this Orange Amaro Tiramisu ($13) is the only exception I’ll make. I won’t crave this as I will the prior dessert, but everyone should try it. The zest of the orange pairs nicely with the dark chocolate and lady fingers.

An homage to Chef Amanda’s days at her first line cook job on the dessert line at Del Posto, her namesake Cookie Plate ($13) is piled high with all sorts of nibbles that will surely satisfy your inner child’s cookie cravings.

Hand-painted walls adorned with city scenes offer a playful nod to the neighborhood beyond the sweeping glass windows. Planters of palm tree-like fauna suspend above the brass-accented bar. Pops of red add a touch of whimsy. It’s no surprise such a concept comes from Chef Andrew Carmellini’s NoHo Hospitality Group.

Too many new Italian concepts advertise as “Rome meets New York”; I’ve found that largely false. Naturally, I was wary of Little Fino. However, nobody knows the Eternal City and this borough like Greenpoint native Chef Anthony Ricco, who curated a menu that rings true to the restaurant’s “Rome meets Brooklyn” tagline.

By day, come and work over a cornetto and cappuccino. By night, grab a seat at the bar or snag a table for date night or GNO. The fact that it’s walk-ins only retains that true laissez-faire European approach. Here’s what to order for drinks and dinner:

Teeny Tinis + Snacks for Martinis

You must get the “Teeny Tinis,” specifically as a flight:

• A Solid Dirty Martini (quite literally solid, as it’s a Jell-O shot…I don’t do vodka, but this is *GOOD*)

• Lemongrass Vesper* (my favorite of the four, made with gin)

• Mole Martinez (the precursor to the classic martini, but this one’s made with tequila)

• Dill Turf Club (made with vodka)

The surge in martini sippers demands a selection of snacks geared to the cocktail. Don’t skip the Crispy Polenta Tots with a squeeze of lemon.

Whole Roasted Artichoke

It doesn’t get more Roman than this, baby! Take a leaf, dunk it in the Sicilian aioli, then toss the discard into the brown paper bag served with it.

Tony’s Antipasto + Spiedini From the Wood Fire

You’re either a skinny betch or plain simple if your favorite dish from a restaurant is a salad. I must be the former because I’m certainly not the latter… Add a wood-fired spiedini (kebab) and it’s pure perfection. Family recipes are family recipes for a reason!!!

The Long Sando

The menu’s description–"cold cut, hot pressed"–says it all. Prosciutto and arugula finished with EVOO, salt, and pepper on a 14-inch “sub.” Chef’s kiss.

A Roman Burger

After such Italian plates, a burger feels a bit odd, but it’s a necessity. Smothered with fonduta and pecorino-pepper jam, it’s truly decadent.

Campari Creamsicle + Lemon Panna Twist

If it’s not already, Little Fino’s Campari Creamsicle will soon be all over your FYP–it’s as delicious as it is photo-worthy. Heavy on the Campari and sparing no orgeat or vanilla bean panna, this will offer sweet relief from the summer heat. It’s listed as a cocktail but certainly tastes like dessert. Don’t leave without the Lemon Panna Twist.

I didn’t mean to gate-keep my jaunt to South Caicos for the last nine months…I somehow just never shared. My sister Merritt and I had a little Shelton Sister Getaway™, and I suggest you follow our itinerary. Without further ado, here’s my insider’s guide to a long weekend in South Caicos.

LOCATION

South Caicos is the seventh-largest island within the Turks & Caicos archipelago. Over the last decade or so, the capital of Providenciales, though charming, has become massively commercialized.

Alternatively, South Caicos, a 30-minute flight from "Provo” (as the locals call it), remains largely untapped. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caicos Bank, you’ll have breathtaking vistas of the turquoise waters from every angle.

CHECKING IN: SAILROCK SOUTH CAICOS

Sailrock South Caicos is truly the ultimate island hideaway. After opening eight years ago, the hotel quickly drew moguls and celebrities vying to escape the public. “Regular” folks slowly followed suit and now observe the same discretion as the hotel staff.

Upon landing at the tiny regional airport, guests are picked up from the airport in an extended golf cart. Those lucky enough will be driven by Big Mike, a local who’s been on staff since the beginning.

Guests are transported directly to the luxe Great House for check-in and immediately handed Sailrock’s signature cocktail: Blue Oceans, made with Bambarra Coconut Rum, blue curaçao, lime juice, and coconut water. Sip it while General Manager Ratnaya Putra walks you through the main building’s amenities and escorts you to your accommodations, whether one of the rooms overlooking the ocean or bay, or a private villa.

While the rooms are nice, the villas are the main draw. Expansive, private, and homey, you’ll truly feel like you’re on your own private island.

On the far edge of the grounds are private residences; hotel guests are unable to access this area unless escorted by a property staffer. Here is where you’ll find houses owned by celebrities like Justin and Hailey Bieber, major business moguls based in the UK and the UAE, and a handful of professional American athletes.

The hotel offers a range of experiences and amenities. You never have to leave if you don’t want to, though the hotel’s excursions should not be overlooked (plus, they can be tailored to your interests). More to come on these activities, but it’s worth noting the property amenities: an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a sprawling private beachfront on the Caicos Bank.

Don’t miss the spa; it’s helmed by expert therapists Eko and Joscelyn, who perform all sorts of treatments in your private space or within the open-air Ridgetop Spa Cabanas.

DINING OUT

• The Cove Restaurant & The Beach Bar – Situated on Sailrock’s private beachfront, The Cove Restaurant menu changes often to highlight seasonal ingredients, but always offers delicious Caribbean-inspired dishes. Enjoy all sorts of craft cocktails from The Beach Bar. This is an all-around ideal lunch spot.

• The Great House Bar & Restaurant – Located within the lobby of Sailrock’s Great House, guests gather here each morning for healthful-leaning breakfasts and artfully-executed dinners. The bar is considerably convivial for such a laid-back resort.

• Dolphin Grill – Ocean Beach Resort’s draw isn’t its accommodations; it’s Dolphin Grill. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, grab a drink and a table on the outdoor terrace for the best sunset views in town.

• Private Chef Experience at Sailrock South Caicos – Sailrock guests can delight in personalized in-room fine dining thanks to the private chef experience. This is best enjoyed after a morning on the beach, afternoon spa treatments, and a pre-dinner dip in your villa’s private plunge pool.

• Triple J’s – Serving “the best” jerk chicken, grilled seafood, and ribs, you’ll really only find locals at this hotspot that feels like someone’s backyard BBQ party. Tell Big Mike you’d like to go, and he may bring you as his guest.

SIGHTSEEING

• Cockburn Harbor Tour by Jeep – As a British Overseas Territory with such proximity to the United States, it should come as no surprise that South Caicos is brimming with centuries of history. Jump into a Jeep with one of Sailrock’s guides for an island tour. You’ll start by traversing the outskirts of the property, then head into Cockburn Harbor, the main settlement. You’ll see salt ponds; over 14 churches (mind you, the population is just over 1,100); wild donkeys (the island runs rampant with them!); and buildings dating back to the 1770s.

• Boating Trip – Set off on a nautical adventure from Seaview Marina guided by a local captain and mate (be sure to request Angel and Leo). Here’s the typical itinerary for this 4.5-hr excursion:

  • Admiral Cockburn Land & Sea National Park – Only 480 acres and designated in 1992, this marine and terrestrial protected area supports one of the world’s only remaining healthy barrier reef systems. It’s teeming with sharks (including hammerheads), spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, tropical fish, and more. While you can snorkel here, no locals do and Angel and Leo wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, let them bring you to…

  • Turks & Caicos Barrier Reef – !!! Be mindful to wear reef-safe sunscreen and no lotions, oils, or perfumes. Off the shore of the recently-opened Salterra resort is the ultimate snorkeling spot, where you’ll see tropical fish like barracuda, jacks, parrotfish, and more.

  • Iguana Island – This low-lying island is void of human life. Instead, it’s completely overrun by the endangered Turks & Caicos Rock Iguana. They’re skittish but if you catch one, they’re surprisingly friendly. Plus, the island is surrounded by miles of conch that you can fish & bring back to Sailrock’s chef for them to prepare to your liking.

  • Starfish Alley – Starfish, sand dollars, and even sea urchins are some of the wonders you’ll uncover along this shallow sandbar.

• Glass-Bottom Kayaking + Paddleboarding – Take one of Sailrock’s glass-bottom kayaks or paddleboards through the enchanting flats and scenic creeks of the Caicos Bank. The waters are tranquil, so you’ll be able to appreciate the migratory birds overhead and the marine life and reefs below.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

• Getting There – As of this spring, Miami is the only city with direct flights via American Airways from the U.S. to South Caicos. If you’re loyal to an airline (Delta all the way, baby!), you can take a flight from most major cities into Providenciales, then catch a 30-minute puddle jumper via InterCaribbean Airways. That’s what Merritt and I did, and we had a 5-hour layover during which we got “tipsy” off a pitcher of Rum Punch at Da Conch Shack (mainly because we couldn’t taste the rum, but still) …11/10 recommend.

• Currency + Converters – Despite TCI being a British Overseas Territory, the official currency of the island is USD, so you’ll be all set. Never forget to bring cash for tips. No plug converters are needed, either!

• Lack of Cell Service – When you leave the resort, cell service is basically nonexistent. If you need to access pertinent info like booking confirmations or Maps, download them beforehand.

Perhaps you haven’t heard the news yet…St. Regis–the iconic luxury hospitality group–partnered with contemporary label STAUD on a special capsule collection.

An intimate group of guests from the fashion and travel worlds was given a first look during an exclusive preview event last night…and your girl was invited!

Guests were greeted with silver trays of champagne and margaritas. Though I didn’t sample any, the tropical-inspired hors d’oeuvres looked delightful, from bite-sized tacos perched atop sliced limes to teeny tuna tartare. The guest list included fashion and travel editors, plus VIP tastemakers like Coco Schiffer and Jelena Weir.

Around 6:00 PM, guests gathered to partake in St. Regis’ signature Champagne sabrage, a daily ritual at each property for hotel guests to enjoy–and now, a nod to the collection’s spirit of celebratory sophistication.

Marrying St. Regis’ elegance and STAUD’s West Coast-inspired designs, the collection features curated resort accessories inspired by “bold travel and refined living.”

The ultimate collectors’ piece is STAUD’s Tommy Beaded Bag, with a structured white leather strap and a design depicting a seaside scene, complete with blue umbrellas, boats, a flamingo, and a St. Regis x Staub floaty.

Petite and chic, the Moon Tote Bag was apparently designed with Afternoon Tea at the St. Regis in mind. Boasting polished charm fit for any stay, I believe this will effortlessly bring travelers from a seaside lunch affair to their evening escapades around the resort.

I must get my hands on the Meyers Crochet Hat, a raffa bucket hat providing stylish sun protection. I’d love to sport this on someone’s superyacht (hello, catamaran SpaceCat from The White Lotus) or while lounging atop a chaise on a beach in some far-flung destination.

Those who need all their beachside essentials should opt for the Squillo Rafia Tote. It’s incredibly spacious and will surely fit your sunscreen, sunglasses, favorite book (or two!), and much more.

Yesterday evening, I hauled ass from Williamsburg to the Upper East Side in an attempt to make an 8:30 reservation at Amarena. I arrived 15 minutes late (shocker!!!), but I didn’t feel as bad upon arrival seeing my friends seated with dirty martinis in hand. Now that’s excellent service.

Set within what seems to be a converted brownstone, the entrance to the bi-level eatery–illuminated by an awning stringed with fairy lights–is tucked away along East 86th Street. Everything at Amarena evokes summer on the Amalfi Coast. The lower level is reminiscent of a beach club with sandy hues and a marble bar with rings like wave peaks on the ocean.

If you had a glamorous Italian aunt, the upper level would be similar to her formal dining room: banquettes draped with deep red velvet, marble two- and four-top tables set with Ginori 1735 plates, wood paneling, and an ornate light fixture over the banquet table for large groups. Scenes of Southern Italian beaches and their surrounding winding streets retouched with pink and red tones line the walls.

Once our waiter Entony had us settled with our first round of drinks, he led us through the lengthy menu with the brutally honest precision only a true Italian can master. Here’s how we fared:

Arancini alla zucca ($28 for 2)

While pumpkin risotto doesn’t exactly scream spring, the sweetness coupled with the indulgence of shaved parmigiano reggiano and Camp Ossetra Caviar make these arancini a must no matter the season.

Carciofi alla giudea ($26)

When in Rome, I always love artichokes. When in America, not as much…they’re usually fried to fibrous nothingness. These are divine, with a meaty stem and perfectly crispy leaves. The Calabrian chili-Meyer lemon aioli is a delicious enhancement.

Polipo ($28)

Since embarking on a trip to Greece together last October, my friend Thalia and I are obliged to order octopus wherever we go. Here, a singular meaty tendon is grilled and placed atop a bed of Japanese eggplant-cherry tomato fonduta with basil gremolata.

Carpaccio di Manzo ($35)

If there’s a carpaccio, you can bet I’m ordering it (as will my friend Emma, just one reason why I love her!)

It’s perhaps worth noting that after this course, we switched up our beverages. Emma and I switched to wine (a Barolo from Piemonte for her, and a minerally white from Campania for me), and Thalia and Britney opted for a cocktail. Saluti!

Campanelle alla vodka ($29)

Geno, my friend Britney’s boyfriend, recently shared with her a roundup of the best vodka pasta in New York City. Amarena made the cut, which was no surprise after trying it ourselves. I don’t usually go crazy for vodka sauce, but the campanelle was a welcomed departure from the typical shapes, and the sauce boasts an ideal tomato-to-cream ratio.

Every Day Sunday Gravy ($35)

We almost made it through this meal without a dud. On paper, the components of this pasta sounded great: pappardelle, Brunello coffee-braised beef cheeks, slow-cooked tomato sugo, and parmigiano reggiano. However, the pasta was just too thin for the thickness of the sauce. (*Do note that anything next to the campanelle alla vodka has some serious stacking up to do.)

Branzino alla caponata ($40)

The Branzino is prepared delicately with lemon and olive oil. It also happens to be the perfect vessel for the Japanese eggplant-cherry tomato fonduta, which made another appearance, this time with the addition of pine nuts and capers.

Torta al limone ($17)

We initially wanted to order the namesake black sour cherry dessert, but were told to skip it for the torta al limone instead. I’ll forever be grateful for that advice. This Meyer lemon olive oil-pistachio cake with limoncello frosting is truly something special.

Cioccolato ($17)

It should be illegal to not order chocolate for dessert. Heavenly and decadent beyond belief, each slice of this cake is layered with chocolate ganache and served with a side of mascarpone crema.

Today, I’m recapping last night’s Sunday supper at The Four Horsemen. I’ve lived in Williamsburg for five years and finally snagged a coveted walk-in resy (*10:00pm at the bar, no less).

I’m assuming most of you are familiar with the concept, but in case you’re not, it’s a Michelin-starred and James Beard Award-winning restaurant and wine bar on Grand Street serving New American small plates and natural wine. Plus, it’s part-owned by LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy.

For years, I’ve listened to fellow foodies gush over The Four Horsemen’s pasta. To my dismay, no pasta was found on last night’s menu…not only that, but nothing immediately jumped out at me. Warm house bread (*for $10!)? Carrot salad? Berkshire pork sausages? I understand no kitchen wants to go crazy on a Sunday night, but first impressions left me uninspired.

The food menu had me so nervous that I let Jack lead the way on the wine front. We paired the first few dishes with a minerally orange from Italy, and the last few with a bright, juicy red with notes of sour cherry. I wish I’d paid better attention.

In a welcomed turn of events, it was luckily just the menu layout that left a lot to be desired. The presentation of each plate–married with the expert technique and symphony of flavors–completely blew me away.

Our waiter recommended we order anywhere between four and six dishes. Here’s where we landed:

Gnocco fritto

Typical dish from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. The Four Horsemen’s is a dream: puffy fried dough is laden with layers of smoked speck, drizzled with olive oil, and finished with cracked black pepper.

Smoked beets

Unexpectedly savory, these beets are smoked to perfection and topped with a heaping of horseradish cream.

Veal sweetbread skewers

Contrary to popular belief, sweetbreads are the thymus or pancreas from a calf or lamb. (If you’re at all squeamish, take my advice and don’t look it up.) Excellent sweetbreads are mild, creamy, and tender–and these fit the bill. Charred and dusted with pimentón, we dipped each bite into a side of soy-cured egg yolk.

Butter beans in brodo

Velvety butter beans float amidst an herbaceous broth with chunks of Japanese sweet potato reminiscent of pork fat. Parmigiano reggiano was shaved generously over top. I couldn’t get enough.

Berkshire pork sausages

I f*cking hate sausage. I still tried a bite–after all, you never know what you’ll end up enjoying. Jack said these were exceptional, however, I’d rate them a can-miss based purely on my own bias. (Plus, can we agree there’s something overwhelmingly phallic about this presentation that makes these sausages oh so unsexy?)

Ginger ice cream + Sticky toffee pudding

The lemon gelée on top was unlike anything I’d ever tried, but the dish overall was more of a palate-cleanser. As for the latter, I’m a chocolate dessert girl through and through. But, I took two bites of the sticky toffee pudding, turned to Jack, and said, “This is my death row meal: appetizer, entrée, and dessert.” It’s absolutely decadent with a sumptuous toffee syrup and scoop of cold and soft whipped cream more akin to fior di latte gelato.

While The Four Horsemen’s menu changes daily, this meal alone convinced me anything served here is a sure hit.

Since this trip was so last minute, I basically winged the plan–something I rarely if ever do when traveling. Usually, I’ll set a rough itinerary and make some reservations while allowing for flexibility as we get recommendations along the way. I was slightly anxious but mostly excited to venture out of my comfort zone.

However, nothing could’ve prepared me for the shitstorm (literal, sorry) of a weekend that would unfold.

FRIDAY

The trip started strong. Despite a wildly crowded airport, Jack and I made it through security in time for a quick breakfast in the lounge.

I ran into my friend Jeff while boarding the plane, who was heading to NOLA for a wedding, and I ended up sitting right in front of him. Small world!

CHECKING IN: THE PONTCHARTRAIN HOTEL

Upon landing, Jack and I headed to our hotel: The Pontchartrain. Located in the Lower Garden District adjacent to the city’s charming streetcar, this 1927-era hotel boasts historic Old World charm with modern amenities.

The hotel was hosting me for a story, and since this was apparently a busy weekend in the Big Easy, they offered me the Polyhymnia Two-Room Suite in lieu of a traditional King room. The suite was truly luxurious: a master bedroom with two Double beds, plus an entertaining space with a sofa and antique desk. All the furniture was outfitted with sumptuous velvet textiles and tropical influences were visible throughout.

The massive bathroom featured a full closet, vanity, and separate washroom. The medicine cabinet filled with old tinctures and tonics was a nice touch.

DINING OUT: LUNCH

I worked from the room all day before finally ducking out for a *very* late lunch/early dinner. I’d only been to New Orleans once: with my mom to tour Tulane. We’d loved the muffulettas from Central Grocery so much that we’d stopped by to grab another one before our flight home. Naturally, I had to return.

It was here where the muffuletta was invented; after immigrating to New Orleans from Sicily, Salvatore Lupo opened Central Grocery in the French Quarter in 1906 and created the recipe for this world-famous sandwich. It’s still prepared with the original recipe, piled high with ham, salami, mortadella, provolone cheese, and a signature olive spread.

SIGHTSEEING: THE FRENCH QUARTER

We spent the better half of the early evening wandering around the French Quarter, the city’s historic heart and oldest neighborhood. The architecture blends French, Spanish, Creole, and American styles, with stucco façades, second-floor balconies, wrought-iron details, and bright colors. A visit on the heels of Mardi Gras season promises plenty of elaborate decorations, and naturally, beads. Plus, you’re sure to stumble upon some brass bands playing in the street.

Voodoo: Perhaps nowhere else in America is voodoo more prevalent than Louisiana, with New Orleans as its hub. Voodoo first arrived in Louisiana with enslaved African Americans in the early 1700s, who merged their religious practices with New Orleans’ existing devotion to Catholicism. Marie Laveau was the most famous voodoo queen, and there are references to her everywhere. There are endless opportunities to dabble in voodoo here, with guided tours, a visit to The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum, or poking around the various shops. Our favorites were Esoterica Occult Goods (Google reviews are mixed, but we loved it), Voodoo Authentica, and The Voodoo Bone Lady.

America’s Oldest Bar: Swing by Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar, allegedly the oldest bar structure in the U.S. It weathered two great fires during the 19th century thanks to its slate roofing and remains a local watering hole today. Order a beer (a can of Guinness, if you’re like Jack) or their “Purple Drink” (some sort of daiquiri).

Shopping: The vintage shopping in New Orleans is unparalleled. I’ve been told the best spots aren’t in the French Quarter, but you’ll definitely find some gems, like Vintage Market by Trashy Diva.

DINING OUT: DRINKS + DINNER

After returning to the hotel and freshening up, we headed downstairs to Bayou Bar, The Pontchartrain’s lobby bar with a renowned jazz program that draws locals and visitors alike.

The live music was as exceptional as I thought it would be. However, unbeknownst to me then, things would take a turn about six hours after indulging in their Garlic Fries and Hot Honey Wings. (*The fact that everyone around us had ordered food from the hotel’s all-day dining destination, Jack Rose, should’ve been my first tell…plus, my own Jack was uncharacteristically uninterested in both dishes after sampling them.)

Upon finishing my “Pimms-Possible” cocktail (Bristow gin, Pimm’s, ginger, mint, lemon, soda) and with a tummy full of *cursed* wings and fries, we headed to The Restaurant at The Chloe, a hopelessly charming hotel in Uptown with the ambiance of a traditional New Orleans mansion. (*I’d actually reached out to their PR team in the hopes of coordinating a stay, but they were only offering media rates…the rate for the second night was upwards of $1,000. After seeing it in real life, I can’t even be mad.)

The wrought-iron archway at the entrance is more akin to a time portal. Guests are instantly transported to the garden of a stately mansion that feels less like a hotel and more like the home of your eccentric, elderly great-aunt who comes from Old Southern .

Sloping palm trees don hundreds of little string lights that cast a warm glow over the black-and-white-striped umbrellas, marble tables, and lawn furniture that dot the front lawn. Inside, an elongated gator motif slinks down the rug on the staircase, seating areas are adorned with pastel velvet textiles, and kitschy artwork lines the walls. The restaurant, bar, and common rooms are abuzz through all hours of the night.

The weather was mild so we opted for a table outside where we sipped Corpse Revivers (gin, Cointreau, Lillet blanc, absinthe rinse, lemon) and Tea For Ones (Pimm’s, ancho chile, strawberry, ginger, lime). We shared Charred Broccoli & Cauliflower Salad, Seared Duck Breast, and Mixed Pickles. For dessert, we treated ourselves to the Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich.

We could’ve extended our experience with “The Ultimate Nightcap”–a tongue-in-cheek offer for a discounted overnight stay. Trust me, I was tempted!

GOING OUT: TIPITINA’S

From The Chloe, we called a car and took a short drive over to the legendary music venue Tipitina’s for Nola Funk Fest.

The establishment is named for the late musician Professor Longhair. The iconic banana logo is a nod to the juice bar the space once hosted (in addition to the stage, a restaurant, and a bar). After some changes in ownership over the past few decades, Tipitina’s was eventually purchased by New Orleans-based jam band Galactic. Now as it always has, guests can expect stellar live funk, soul, and jazz sets.

SATURDAY

Remember I said I thought there was no way I could miss Ed Sheeran’s procession through the French Quarter? Turns out the universe had other plans for me…I had the absolute gnarliest bout of food poisoning for over 12 hours and thus couldn’t make it.

I was devastated (and still am, honestly). Spent the rest of the day sleeping on and off and trying to hold down ginger ale and crackers. Luckily, Jack arrived back at the hotel later that afternoon armed with an arsenal of voodoo charms from Esoterica Occult Goods.

SUNDAY

Stumbled around the suite packing my bags before departing for the airport at 8:30am. What should’ve been a seamless day of travel resulted in a 2.5-hour takeoff delay, a 4-hour late arrival into JFK, and managing my wildly upset stomach all the while.

SOME PARTING THOUGHTS…

1. I’m desperate to get back to New Orleans and create a more comprehensive guide…if you work with any hotels, restaurants, tour operators, etc. in the city, let’s chat!

2. If I had to do it all again, I would repeat my Friday (MINUS BAYOU BAR’S GARLIC FRIES & CHICKEN WINGS!!!!!). I recommend adding the little I managed to do to your own itinerary.

3. I’m certainly off garlic and chicken for the foreseeable future.

I guess this is where the *record scratch* *freeze frame* comes in, and I say something like: “So, how did a random New York girlie like me manage to get into the St. Moritz Toboggan Club?”

After closing out the summer with a whirlwind girls’ weekend in Cape Cod, my good friend Emma invited our little crew to join her father-daughter getaway to St. Moritz. No, we certainly would not be imposing, and of course, her dad would love to show us around.

So, one thing led to another…and sadly not all of the girls could get the PTO. However, the trip did make it out of the group chat for 3/4 of us.

My friend Emma is one of the most well-traveled yet down-to-earth people I know. She’s traveled to private islands of Mozambique, gone on safari around Africa, and skied powdery Austrian slopes while growing up in the U.K. before moving to America for middle school.

She’s not braggadocious and she’s pretty laidback. So, when it was casually revealed on our 3-hour train ride from Zürich to St. Moritz that her dad is part of this SMTC, we had no idea what we were in for.

Now, I can’t divulge much more than what I’ve already shared. But, I can provide you with a guide based on our four-day jaunt around Sankt Moritz. I implore you to use this when booking your own trip. Just know that you may have to befriend some people in crimson and gold gear to access some places.

How We Got There

There are a few ways to get to St. Moritz. The quickest and most expensive is by helicopter, while the easiest, safest, and most scenic is the Rhaetian Railway.

We had regular tickets going up and did the Gourmino Dining Car for our return. Book a seat in this vintage railway car to enjoy Alpine dishes while admiring the picturesque Swiss countryside.

*If you plan to book the Gourmino Dining Car, I recommend taking it up to St. Moritz instead. If you’re like us, you’ll be eager to get there and will not eat before departing Zürich.

Where We Stayed

• Art Boutique Hotel Monopol – Ideal for those looking for a cushy place to sleep but will be out exploring most of the day. The property has its own art collection, and while the public spaces are a bit dated, the rooms have been renovated with sleek, modern amenities. Sky Bar, St. Moritz’s first and only rooftop bar, is a great place to grab a nightcap when you don’t feel like braving the snow-slicked cobblestone streets.

• Carlton Hotel – This stately lodge just a stone’s throw from Lake St. Moritz completely blew us away. Every floor has a distinctive design theme, and thanks to a turn-of-the-century reno, the rooms feature sweeping landscapes and lots of space. We would have extended our stay here had they not been completely booked.

• VRBO Apartment in Champfèr – We had some trouble finding a place for our final evening, and Emma’s dad was kind enough to let us crash with him. His rental apartment complex was a few minutes walk from Giardino Mountain House, just outside the main town. I’d highly consider booking an apartment for a week here if traveling with more than two friends.

Where We Ate

• La Scarpetta* – Technically you don’t have to belong to the St. Moritz Toboggan Club to get a table, but members are privy to the fact that tables need to be secured a whole year in advance. The menu showcases comforting Italian dishes, and the showstopping handmade pasta dishes change daily. Ask me about Statue of Liberty shots.

• Chasellas – This chalet adjacent to Suvretta House charms with intimate indoor seating or tables along their expansive sun terrace. It’s positioned directly at the entry/exit point of the slopes, so you can ski in and out as you please. Their rustic lunch dishes like wiener schnitzel and risotto are quite satisfying.

• Pizzeria Heuboden at Chesa Veglia – Chesa Veglia is a St. Moritz institution. Originally a farmhouse built in 1658, it now houses three restaurants and numerous bars. The pizzeria within the former hayloft serves various pizza and rustic Italian dishes. Until next time, I’ll be dreaming of the pizza Diavola, burrata with Roma tomato carpaccio, steak tartare, and Chateaubriand.

• Bel Etage – Great spot for a romantic special occasion meal. Its antique furnishings, breathtaking views through grand parlor windows, and live music set this restaurant within the Carlton Hotel apart. The menu is expansive; we opted for martinis, the club sandwich, wiener schnitzel, and a plate of pasta.

• La Diala – Cozy restaurant adjacent to the iconic Badrutt’s Palace Wellness Spa ideal for light, lunchy fare. They have a great club sandwich and a legendary Croque Monsieur.

• Stüva – Alpine chalet-inspired restaurant within Giardino Mountain House serving Engadin fare like spicy steak tartare; venison filet with spätzli, Brussels sprouts, and red cabbage; and capuns, a dish that’s very traditional to the Swiss canton of Graubünden that’s a sort of chard dumpling stuffed with meat and cheese in a bed of melted cheese. This was probably my favorite meal of the trip.

Where We Drank

• Paradiso – Now in its third season, this mountain hut operated by Badrutt’s Palace arguably boasts the most awe-inspiring views in town. Arrive by vintage chairlift or ski in right off the slopes. This is THE place for après; so much so that there’s now a special members’ club that guarantees you all-day access. Next year, you better believe I’ll pay that 40CHF fee to dance and drink the seasonal spritz all day. (*Note that they will kick you out once your reservation slot ends.)

• Zoo Bar at Hotel Soldanella* – St. Moritz is the birthplace of winter sports, and the one celebrated at this establishment is tobogganing. This lobby bar is an homage to “skeleton racing,” with all sorts of paraphernalia and a VCR playing clips from past tournaments on a loop. The hotel is often completely sold out to SMTC members, so expect to find them drinking until the bartender kicks them out at 4am.

• Kulm Country Club – Design-forward spot that’s supposed to be very vibey at night. We went to enjoy aperitivo hour on the terrace overlooking the ice skating rink.

• Pianobar – Tucked into the basement of the Hotel Schweizerhof, the cave-like back rooms are great for chitchatting with friends over drinks. The main room apparently gets pretty rowdy later into the night.

• Altitude Bar – If you haven’t gotten the memo by now: 1) My friends and I love hotels, so yeah, we do most of our drinking and dining at different properties, and 2) Lowkey, hotel bars are the places to go in St. Moritz. Kulm Hotel, St. Moritz’s first and oldest hotel, is worth all the hype. However, this lobby bar is often overlooked. It’s a great spot for light noshes and they’ll make any cocktail you desire. Grab the table dedicated to Billy Fiske and lock in for a quick history lesson about the great American fighter pilot and Olympian bobsledder.

  

• Hotel Lobby at Suvretta House – Definitely best for Afternoon Tea (which I plan on doing next year), but this is a relaxing perch for an Aperol Spritz after a day on the slopes.

• Cresta Bar* – Following a major property reno, fourth-generation hotelier sisters Daniela and Francesa Märky managed to preserve the beloved lobby bar of Hotel Seffani. It’s yet another popular haunt for the SMTC, and the likes of the Royal Household Cricket Club, and so on.

Where We Partied

• Stübli – This is the other basement bar at Hotel Schweizerhof. There’s nightly live music, and drinks here are relatively cheaper than what you’ll find elsewhere. Due to the small layout, guests are invited to dance on tabletops. Once the live music wraps for the night, expect ABBA and reggaeton until closing. The crowd here definitely skews younger.

• Drac’s* – Formally known as Dracula’s Ghost Riders Club, this private members’ club is perched atop an icy mount and resembles a castle. Boozing guests fly like bats from the mantel and dance until dawn beneath a garlic-shaped disco ball. The club does not tolerate photos; bouncers place a sticker over your camera. You’ll only be granted access with a Lifetime or St. Moritz Toboggan Club member.

What We Did

• Skiing – The skiing is as exceptional as you think it is. I grew up skiing on the East Coast and had never been on such powdery slopes. If you need a lesson, book through Skischule; they have more than 500 instructors and generally seem to act as Ski Patrol.

• The St. Moritz Toboggan Clubhouse at Cresta Run* – Founded in 1885 and home to the world’s most thrilling ice toboggan track, Cresta Run, the SMTC is a legendary institution. Members are united by their love of tobogganing–whether participating or spectating–and are a welcoming, rowdy crew. Thanks to Andrew, Emma’s dad, we went to the Club for the Grand National, one of their biggest races of the year. Between races, we sipped gin fizz and pined for our own crimson and gold scarves.

• White Turf – Annual horse races on the frozen Lake St. Moritz. Aside from spectating, there’s live music, food stalls, and plenty of champagne.

• St. Moritz Cocktail Week – This four-day event celebrates the art of mixology. Bars all over town get involved with special innovative cocktails, and there are tons of nightlife events.

• Window Shopping + Gallery Hopping Around Town – I’m assuming your budget as a 20- or 30-something does not afford you the luxury of swiping at the likes of Loro Piana, Bvlgari, and beyond…and if it does, let’s talk. ;) But really, the window shopping here is unparalleled as many designers curate a collection of seasonal items specific to St. Moritz with artful displays to match. Showrooms are interspersed between storefronts; don’t miss TONY KELLY WORLD, and browse St. Moritz’s website for pop-ups from global galleries.

• On the Slopes: As one of the most luxurious ski towns in the world, the slope style in St. Moritz is no joke. Everyone seems to be outfitted in the season’s chicest ensembles from designer brands. We were probably the only ones wearing Halfdays; I rocked the Aston Jacket (and would not recommend my GSou Snow pants). As for base layers, we wore this onesie, plus Halfdays’ Clare Lightweight Bamboo Top and Ruth Lightweight Bamboo Leggings.

• Around Town: You’re all set as long as you have a fur coat, Moon Boots, and a fur hat or chic beanie. Underneath, you can get by anywhere with base layers. Finish the look with sunglasses and a designer crossbody purse.

• At Dinner & Going Out: The evening dress code is very reminiscent of Manhattan. Whatever you wear out in the city will fly in St. Moritz. As with the current trends, we sported hot shorts with sheer tights; fur-trim pieces like this Alice + Olivia top with fur cuffs and miniskirts; and tall leather boots. As for makeup, there’s no need for a full beat.

Know Before You Go

• Smoking indoors is permitted, and people lean into it. This isn’t the case for most restaurants and select hotel areas, but certainly in bars and nightclubs. It’s fun for sure, but if you don’t like the smell of cigs, plan to overpack a bit.

• While euros are accepted nearly everywhere, I’d go to your bank in advance and have them order Swiss Francs. Otherwise, know that there’s an additional tax for paying in euros. Plus, change is given in CHF anyway.

Ah, St. Moritz. Having been a popular summer destination for the British aristocracy in the mid-19th century, the sweeping Engadin valley became the birthplace of winter sports (and winter tourism) when a hotelier invited select leading socialites to remain for the entire year.

150 years later, a holiday in this alpine resort town promises plenty of glamour, athletic opportunities, and après-ski culture.

You probably know St. Moritz is the playground for the famous and global elites. Sure, you’ll find business tycoons lounging in the Kulm Hotel lobby and influencers dancing around the Members’ Club at Paradiso after a few runs down the mountain. But, insiders know the real who’s-who of St. Moritz are those donning scarlet and gold.

The St. Moritz Toboggan Club is a legendary institution founded in 1885 and home to the world’s most thrilling ice toboggan track, Cresta Run. Built every year from scratch using the natural contours of the valley, the Run’s ten demanding corners have challenged even the greatest of athletes for over a century (hello, Shuttlecock!) with races like the Claude Cartier Challenge Cup, the Morgan Cup, and the Grand National (the latter of which I was present for just the other week).

Only SMTC members are permitted to compete in these unique and highly skillful races here or spectate from the landmark Clubhouse.

Historically, there have only been two forms of criteria for membership:

1. Compete in various toboggan (aka “skeleton”) practice days and Club Races.

2. Be a male.

The restriction on allowing women to ride on only one end-of-season special day has modernized in the last decade. Male and female riders are now welcome on any day of the week, and there are now social-level memberships–as in, you’re no longer required to hurtle down a chute at breakneck speeds if you do not wish to do so.

The application process is rigorous, but once you experience even a single day as a guest, you’ll surely be itching to join. No matter your status within the club, everyone is incredibly warm, inviting, and charming. Ultimately, the SMTC is a community united by the thrill of tobogganing–whether participating or spectating–and it’s no wonder that bearing the colors remains such an honor.

Symbolizing the club’s daring spirit and aristocratic heritage, scarlet signifies boldness, while gold represents prestige. Scarves are the most popular way to showcase St. Moritz Toboggan Club’s colors, though they can be adorned on ties, caps, sweaters, and more.

Cresta members are a welcoming, rowdy crew, both in and out of the Clubhouse. Everyone seems to be an endless ball of energy, sipping champagne and the Club’s beloved gin fizz between races. The latter half of the afternoon is then spent lunching and bouncing about town in droves of scarlet and gold.

On days without races or events, members will still wear SMTC merchandise–whether for style, practicality, or to spark conversations with fellow members they may not have met yet.

By night, they reconvene once more to brave the icy mount (by taxi) that leads to Drac’s, *another* private members’ club where Life Members and their guests fly like bats from the mantelpiece and dance until dawn beneath a glittering, garlic-shaped disco ball.

After middle school, I bet you’d never dreamed a group sporting anything so profoundly reminiscent of Hogwarts’ Gryffindor would be the people to know, huh? Don’t judge a book by its cover…

Growing up–and even now–I imagine the hotel’s housekeeping team as little fairies flitting about my room, going about this momentous routine: pulling back the bed covers; arranging a pair of slippers at the bedside; setting out a bottle of water; placing something a treat atop the pillow; and dimming the lights before stealing into the night.

I’m not embarrassed to admit this simple act always makes me feel like a princess. More than anything, this show of hospitality always roots me with a sense of place, as if to remind me: no, I’m not at home…I’m discovering and being welcomed somewhere new.
